New England Search and Rescue was founded by Chris Combs of Lincoln, RI, in 2008.  At that time, the need for a water search and rescue team became apparent, as no special team existed outside of the U.S. Coast Guard and local emergency services.  These public safety teams respond to emergencies in a professional and dedicated manner, however, their ability to provide long term services, is restricted.  NESAR was created to assist these public safety agencies  with a group of volunteer divers, EMT's, firefighters, police officers, and members of the general public, who would stand by, assist, and deploy teams in the event of an emergency.

In 2010, New England Search and Rescue formed a Board of Directors and moved the organization towards the goal of becoming a non profit agency.  In the two years since it's inception, NESAR had grown and participated in many search's in the southern New England area.  The need to grow and better organize the team, as well as being able to continue to provide our services at no cost, led to the decision to create the new non profit.   The Directors registered the team with the Rhode Island Secretary of State's Office as a Not for Profit Corporation, created a Command Staff, By-Laws, and Standard Operating Procedures.  Thanks to the hard work of many, NESAR received it's Federal  501 (c)(3) from the IRS, in March 2011.

New England Search and Rescue is
committed to marine safety and awareness.  NESAR is an all volunteer force, whose members stand ready to carry out the mission of NESAR and it's partner organizations.  NESAR volunteers are trained by emergency services personnel and maritime professionals from all over the New England area.  We have a group of rescue swimmers, divers, EMT's and boat operators ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to assist any public safety agency, state and federal agency,  family, group, or individual that requires our services.

All our members are trained at a basic level, including BLS and state certified boating safety. however, many members are EMT's and Paramedics, with certifications in ACLS, NIMS, and  marine medicine.  Divers must have at minimum, their advanced open water certification to train as public safety divers, our team consists of Rescue Divers and Dive Masters, our dive instructor has over 6,700 dives and has been involved in dive operations all over the East Coast, and has worked as a public safety dive instructor for 17 years in Massachusetts. All our volunteer staff is well trained to carryout the mission of New England Search and Rescue.
